"Map of ground deposition of caesium-137 for the Chernobyl accident: The simulation was performed with a specific version of the numerical atmospheric chemistry and transport model Polyphemus/Polair3D. The parametrisation used for the transport and physical removal of the radionuclides are described in [1,2,3,4]. The magnitude of the deposition field is uncertain and the simulated value of deposited radionuclides could be different from the actual from the actual deposition. However the source term is much better known than for Fukushima-Daichii. A comparison with deposition measurements will be conducted to evaluate the simulation." source: CEREA (see also the animation listed here)

2011-04-03 Episode 180 – The Chernobyl Question, by The Corbett Report. "Fukushima is not Chernobyl. The plants have different designs, were effected in different ways and are behaving differently. Nevertheless, there are still things that we can learn about the Chernobyl disaster that might teach us about our current situation. Join us this week as we uncover some of the secrets of Chernobyl and ask what this can tell us about Fukushima."
2011-04-04 'Catastrophic water dump means Fukushima really out of control' (RT Video). description: "Japan is dumping more than ten thousand tonnes of radioactive water from the Fukushima plant into the Pacific. Officials say this is a necessary step to free up storage space for more highly contaminated water. The government says it will not harm human health or the environment. But an independent nuclear energy consultant Shaun Burnie feels the move is likely to have serious consequences."

Here's the Nuclear Safety Commission's estimate of the total release of radioactive materials as of April 5. Looking at the chart (I added the English explanation), they did seem to think that after the surge on March 15 and 16 (after the Reactors 3 and 4 explosions) the daily release was hardly more than 24 terabequerels; the lines went flat after March 23 or so:
If it has been 154 terabequerels per day instead of 24 since March 23, that's already additional 4,160 terabequerels by now, which alone would translate into the INES Level 5.
An INES Level 5 "accident" every month, Level 6 every 3 months? Slow and steady wins the race to pass the Chernobyl accident...

[...] Cs-134 activities were quantified for 23 samples from Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming. The Cs-134 ranged from 0.40 to 55 pCi/L, and deposition values ranged from 0.47 to 180 Bq/m2. Cs-134 values reported for all but one site (CO90 near Nederland, Colo.) have substantial error because they were manually estimated from the gamma-ray spectra. Cs-137 activities were quantified for 33 samples from Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnessota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. These samples ranged from 0.70 pCi/L to 39 pCi/L, and calculated deposition values ranged from 0.78 to 240 Bq/m2. Cs-134 and Cs-137 activities were not adjusted for decay to date of sample collection because radioactive decay during the 2-month period between collection and analysis was negligible for these isotopes. [...]??Atmospheric dispersion of radionuclides from the Fukushima-Daichii nuclear power plant, CEREA:??The simulation was performed with a specific version of the numerical atmospheric chemistry and transport model Polyphemus/Polair3D. The parametrisations used for the transport and physical removal of the radionuclides are described in [1,2,3,4]. The magnitude of activity concentration field is uncertain and could be significantly different from the actual one. In particular, the source term remains uncertain. Therefore, these results should be seen as preliminary and they are likely to be revised as new information become available to better constrain the source term and when radionuclides data can be used to evaluate the model simulation results.
Make no mistake about it however, what that means is that they are showing the levels of contamination based on official TEPCO and government reported data of levels of radiation released. We constantly learn that official government supplied numbers are skewed, often far under reported and later revised greatly higher. This means that when, and if, the real levels of radiation released the actual level of cesium contamination in the United States and Canada will be much higher than the simulation map.
Obviously this is just not even being discussed, the world has been praying for Japan, and here we are in the US and Canada actually receiving the bulk of the radiation through the jetstream.

2011-04-09 4/9/11 Video: Saint Louis, Missouri Radioactive Thunderstorm Fallout Detected (video) uploaded by potrblog
It is difficult to draw risk conclusions about the two larger radioactive drizzle and thunderstorm events here in Saint Louis Missouri. There is too little data to make my analysis much more than a SWAG (Scientific Wild Assed Guess). The data that are there point in different directions; and the SWAGs I have to make to pull those different directions together all have troubling connotations [updates to come].
A reasonable risk mitigation strategy for those troubling connotations are:
(1) Don't expose skin to the rain
(2) Don't bring rain soaked items into a closed environment
(3) Don't drive into heavy rain, or in areas where recent rain is being aerosolized by car/truck tires
(4) Don't leave the car's environmental controls on fresh air if it is raining.
(5) Triple the efforts to avoid the above scenarios if there is an Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejection
Video Details:
4/9/11 Radioactive fallout from the trailing edge of a thunderstorm moving through Saint Louis Missouri. The reading was taken from a paper towel used to wipe off a small amount of rain from the hood area. The readings stabilized at 0.2 mR/hr. A sheet of plastic and piece of sheet metal where used as filters to determine if Alpha, Beta, or Gamma radiation were present. The primary form of radiation appeared to be Beta. At 11am, the sample had no detectable radiation above background.
The thunderstorm squall line moved in at approximately 4:30 am and moved out at approximately 6:30 am. The rain stopped and started three times during that time period; My samples correlate to that pattern. Samples were taken at the start, mid, and end points of the storm. The methodology was to wipe raindrops off of a metal surface with a paper towel, and then test the dampened paper towel for radioactivity.
The first reading was taken at ~5am from a piece of metal left outside; the readings maxed at roughly 0.05 mR/hr. The second reading was taken @ 5:30 am by driving the truck through a 2-3 mile loop; that reading maxed at roughly 0.05 mR/hr. The third sample exercise started with the truck's hood and windshield clean and dry (from the second round of tests). No radiation was indicated on the hood at the start of the third test. The third test started at approximately 6:15 am and followed the same 2-3 mile loop as the second test. The third test sample maxed and stabilized at approximately 0.2 mR/hr. At 11am, that sample had no detectable radiation above background. The fallout appears to be primarily a source of Beta radiation
Stay out of the rain. If you have to drive through a radioactive fallout out thunderstorm, make sure your ventilation system is set to 'recirculate'.

2011-04-09 4/9/2011 -- ELEVATED (full mid-range) RADIATION -- soon to arrive on west coast USA by Dutchsinse
Already forecasted to be hitting Alaska NOW.. and west coast tomorrow (April 9/10, 2011)..
Full mid levels of Cesium , Xenon, and Iodine.. particulate matter, in the cloud vapor from surface level to 5000m (15,000 feet) ..
These levels are now a full level higher than all the previous forecasts.
It is up to you to decide how you want to approach this data.
Personally, I believe it to be IN THE PRECIPITATION for sure.. which means you do not want to get the rain or snow on you, and do not want to injest the fluid.. (i.e. drink the water) until levels deminish.
